Lupus by the Numbers
Lupus disproportionately affects communities of color: African American women are 3x more likely to develop lupus than white women. African American children are also at higher risk, and African American men experience lupus at significantly higher rates than white men.
What is Lupus?
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks healthy tissues, causing inflammation and damage to various parts of the body including joints, skin, kidneys, heart, and lungs.
Common Symptoms
- Extreme fatigue
- Joint pain and swelling
- Butterfly-shaped facial rash
- Fever and photosensitivity
- Hair loss and mouth sores
Diagnosis
Diagnosis involves blood tests (ANA, anti-dsDNA), physical examination, symptom history, and ruling out other conditions. Early diagnosis is crucial for effective management.
Treatment Options
Treatment may include NSAIDs, antimalarial drugs, corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, and lifestyle modifications. Treatment plans are personalized to each individual.
Fibromyalgia by the Numbers
Fibromyalgia affects all demographics: While more common in women, fibromyalgia also affects men and children. It can develop at any age, though most people are diagnosed during middle age.
What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, sleep issues, and cognitive difficulties. It affects how the brain processes pain signals.
Common Symptoms
- Widespread pain lasting 3+ months
- Chronic fatigue and sleep problems
- “Fibro fog” memory and concentration issues
- Headaches and migraines
- IBS and other digestive issues
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on widespread pain index, symptom severity scale, and ruling out other conditions. There is no single diagnostic test for fibromyalgia.
